420 Quench Oil

Oil Based Quenchant

Description

420 QUENCH OIL is a clear, amber colored accelerated quench oil designed for use at quenching temperatures between 200 - 250°F (93 - 121°C). Also, it can be used as a quench from temperatures as high as 1750°F. The cooling rate during the first stages of quenching enables the user to produce uniformly hardened parts, while the higher operating temperature of the quenchant slows the cooling rate during the martensitic transformation (Ms-Mf). Even slower than AAA QUENCH OIL during martensitic transformation, 420 QUENCH OIL can be used for applications where distortion must be held to a minimum with little sacrifice in the as-quenched hardness. It is widely used as a quenching medium for carburized and carbonitrided applications.

Key Properties

  • Designed to provide an accelerated quenching speed for austenitized steels, with temperatures suitable for quenching between 200 - 250°F (93 - 121°C). It allows for uniform hardening of parts with minimal distortion thanks to its controlled cooling rates, particularly during the martensitic transformation phase, which it handles even more slowly than similar fast quench oils like AAA Quench Oil.
  • A clear, amber-colored fluid with a high viscosity at 100°F of over 54.0 cSt, which helps in reducing the velocity of quenching and thus minimizes the deformation risks associated with rapid temperature changes in treated metals. Its flash point is exceptionally high, over 420°F (216°C), which contributes to safer handling and reduces the risk of fire.
  • Adjustable for different hardening requirements. If the quench speed becomes slower, resulting in decreased hardness, adding a 5% volume of Quench Oil Accelerator can restore its performance. This flexibility makes it adaptable to varying operational needs without significant changes to the setup or process parameters.
  • Requires careful handling to avoid hazards associated with water contamination, which can significantly alter its quenching characteristics and increase fire risk. Proper disposal is mandated to comply with federal, state, and local regulations, emphasizing the need for environmental consideration and safety.
