Nu-Sal

Chloride Based Salt

Description

Nu-Sal is a barium free chloride mixture with low weight per cubic foot properties and has excellent fluidity within its working temperature range. It is easily washed from oil-quenched work because it is completely water soluble. Also, Nu-Sal is not hygroscopic, so it is less corrosive than other salts to the metal fixtures, electrodes, etc.

Nu-Sal can be used for all neutral salt bath heating operations. These include austenitizing of carbon and low alloy steels for hardening, reheating carburized steels, annealing and spheroidizing. Nu-Sal is the ideal austenitizing medium for steels to be austempered, martempered, or otherwise isothermally quenched, because its fluidity minimizes drag-out and it dissolves readily in the salt bath quench. It can be used as a pre-heat for high-speed steel tools, replacing barium containing salts if it is desirable to use the preheat bath for austenitizing other types of steel.

Key Properties

  • Nu-Sal is a barium-free chloride mixture notable for its excellent fluidity within its operational temperature range and its complete water solubility, facilitating easy removal from oil-quenched work.
  • It is designed for use in various neutral salt bath heating operations, such as austenitizing of carbon and low alloy steels, reheating carburized steels, annealing, and spheroidizing, making it versatile for different steel treatment processes.
  • Nu-Sal is non-hygroscopic and less corrosive to metal fixtures, electrodes, etc., compared to other salts, offering a more material-friendly solution in industrial environments.
  • Its physical properties include a melting point of 1230ºF, a working range of 1300 - 1650ºF, and a density of 105 lbs./ft.^3 at 1500°F, with a white appearance and no vapor pressure, indicating its stability and safety in use.
  • Safety precautions include avoiding contamination with combustible materials to prevent fires or explosions, and the product requires careful handling and proper protective gear to prevent burns or other injuries, emphasizing its handling safety protocols.
